படிகள் 30வது இதழ் தொடர்பான ஆங்கில விமரிசனம்

The thirtieth issue of ‘Padikal’, a magazine published once in two months from Anuradhapura has taken a different size in its January - March 2012 issue. The cover features three photos of VIPs and another picture shows one aspect of the slice of life of the poorest among us. The magazine I edited by M Waseem Akram, assisted by M C Najimudeen. But there are a few other people who help in the publication: Anbu Jawahar Shah, Naachiya Theevu Parveen, Jancy Cafoor, Rizwi Mahroof, G Gnanachandran, I Rahmathulla, M A M Dilshan, Anuradhapuram Jameel, A H M Zabras and Negama Bazaan. The three personalities in the cover are the late Prof M M Uvais, recently titled ‘Sahithya Ratna’ Prof Saba Jeyarasa and Dr Himaana Seiath. Padikal also means “Steps”. It could be even “copies”.
In the current issue two personalities are profiled: M M Uvais and Saba Jeyarasa. The writers that profiled them respectively are a Muslim intellectual S H M Jameel and yours truly (K S Sivakumaran). Due to exigencies of space details from these profiles could not be accommodated. They deserve to be told as separate articles in view of the length of the summation. The Magazine wishes to organize a full day programme covering literary and arts activities in the Anuradhapura district which is a good thing because we could gather lot of information from that region that could place them in the larger context of Lankan Thamil Literature. The editor L Waseem Akram has written a fine piece on the Thamil Cinema that moves towards a change. He says that the Thamil Cinema has not yet reached the standard that the Sinhala or Iranian cinema had reached. However, he admits that there are welcome changes particularly films produced in 2010. He identifies some films and directors who have been trying to bring changes then and now. In an interview with Dr Himaanaa Seiyath, a Thamil Nadu physician and writer, Dr Thassim Ahammed brings out a coherent feature bringing out the importance of the interviewee in the field of Thamil literature. Readers could gather a lot of information from the articles mentioned above. Pradeep informs that in the recent 31st Youth Council Drama Festival, seven awards were won by dramatists from the Anuradhapura district. “Salome” alone won seven awards for its presentation. M C Najimudeen won the best actor award at the national level for acting in “Kalaintha Kanavukal” (Dissolved Dreams) also produced from the same district. As for creative writing there are two short stories by Welipane Aththaas and Maruthoor Jamaldeen and poems by Mullai Mustiffa, Thuwarakan, Vetti Thushyanthan, Kaathankudy Fowz, Negama Bazan, Zaroos and a translated poem by K M Safeek.

Dickwela Kamal, an educationist, writer and critic drafts the literary waves in Anuradhapura district. Razmila Nihar talks about glossary word formation in Lanka. Mansoor A Kader makes some observations on a very important creative writer in Thamil from Kalmunai, Uma Varatharajan. Kader uses the word “Avathaanam” which means “Caution”. The correct Thamil word for observation is “Avathaanippu”. C Kumaralingam has done a translation of an article on ‘Wall Street Struggle’. Xavier has reviewed the poems of Shibly. Readers’ letters are from M M Riyabudeen, Priya Kaarthikeyan, Eelatheen, and M H M Rifkhan. ‘Padikal’ like other serious little magazines in the country contribute very much to understanding contemporary Thamil literature in Sri Lanka.
